Jassy (city) The Municipality (here is a map of the city) - historically also named IASS, Iaшii, Iaşi
- is the main city of Iaşi county and the main urban centre in northeastern Romania. The city was the capital of Moldova between 1564-1859, one of the two capitals of the united principalities between 1859 and 1862 and of Romania between 1916-1918.
Iaşi is a city of great ideas, of the first major country union, of the first Romanian-language theater performance and of the first literary memorial museum (Hut of Ţicău).
It also is the most important economic, political and cultural centre in Moldova and the main city of the second largest county in Romania.
"The city was created not by the caprice of some prince or following a spectacular chance of development of Moldovan history. It is an organic creation of the old Moldova, itself an organic creation of the Romanian people", said the great historian Nicolae Iorga.
Iaşi County has an impressive cultural, artistic, touristic and ethnographic heritage.
