Abstract

Engineering graphics, the set of visual tools, techniques, and conventions used to represent engineering ideas, has always been central to educating engineers. This article argues that graphics are not merely illustrative but form an essential mode of thinking in engineering: they enable spatial reasoning, communicate complex systems efficiently, foster collaboration, and provide rigorous means for analysis and design. We review historic and contemporary roles of graphics in engineering education, discuss pedagogical strategies for integrating graphics, present some examples, and examine the profound and accelerating influence of artificial intelligence (AI) on engineering graphics. The piece concludes with practical recommendations for educators and curriculum designers.
